The title of this installation artwork, Anniversary, refers to the 30th anniversary of a profound childhood event. In the summer of 1969 in Fort Worth, an extraordinary event occurred: There were several reported sightings of a Bigfoot on an island that doubled as a "lover's lane". Right there in my own backyard--Bigfoot! It was the focus of my nine-year-old world--wish fulfillment of the highest order for a small boy. Having been raised in Fort Worth, I had a particular interest in bringing the story of the Goatman back home for the 30-year anniversary in 1999. With the end of this millennium upon us, our anxieties surface—our current obsession with the paranormal looms large. Looking back 100 years, we can see the same thing: obsession with seances, poltergeists, fakirs and faith healers who preyed upon our fears. But I digress. The Goatman is Fort Worth’s very own paranormal boogieman, our own episode on the X-Files. |
