“Romantic Triangle”, 1982
Wood and acrylic paint Lifesize This piece was destroyed during a studio move along with a number of others. This piece was my first project during graduate school. In my last semester of undergraduate school, I had begun to explore breaking out of two dimensions. This piece works more like a sculpture in that the objects can be viewed from all sides. It retains the cartoony style of my first semi-sculptural work featuring my parents at home. At the time, I was using my own life as a narrative source, in this case the surprise connection of a new couple, and the resentment of the left-behind jealous boyfriend -- rendered in a cartoony style. That said, telling the story became secondary to working with wooden planes and achieving balance, quite literally, so that the pieces would stand without tottering. |
